How to Sublimate a Waffle Tea Towel

Looking for a practical yet creative sublimation project? Personalised waffle tea towels are a fantastic way to bring custom designs into the kitchen. Whether you're creating unique gifts, branded merchandise or products to sell, sublimation tea towels offer plenty of opportunities to get creative.

In this guide, we'll show you how to sublimate a waffle tea towel, including what equipment you'll need, the recommended heat press settings and our top tips for achieving a vibrant, professional-looking finish.

What Is a Sublimation Waffle Tea Towel?

A sublimation waffle tea towel is a specially designed fabric blank that allows you to transfer your own artwork, photographs or text using sublimation printing.

Our Sublimation Waffle Tea Towel is made from high-quality, 380gsm microfibre with a soft, absorbent waffle-weave texture.

Measuring 40cm x 60cm, it's ideal for everyday kitchen use, while its sublimation-compatible surface makes it perfect for personalisation.

Each towel features neatly hemmed edges for a durable, professional finish.

What You'll Need

Before getting started, make sure you have the following equipment and supplies:

  • Blank sublimation waffle tea towel

  • Sublimation printer and sublimation ink

  • Sublimation transfer paper

  • Heat press

  • Heat-resistant tape

  • Protective paper, such as butcher paper

  • Lint roller

  • Heat-resistant gloves (optional)

You'll also need your chosen artwork or design, prepared using software such as Canva, Photoshop or another suitable design application.

Top Tip: When you purchase our sublimation waffle tea towels, you'll receive access to Canva and Photoshop templates to help you prepare your designs.

Step 1: Prepare Your Design

Start by creating the design you'd like to transfer onto your tea towel.

Popular choices include personalised names, kitchen-themed illustrations, family recipes, seasonal artwork and business logos.

For the best results, use high-resolution artwork and ensure your design fits within the printable area of your tea towel.

Remember to mirror your design before printing, particularly if it contains text, so it transfers the correct way around.

Print your artwork onto sublimation paper using your sublimation printer.

Step 2: Prepare Your Waffle Tea Towel

Before pressing, it's important to prepare the fabric properly.

Lay your blank tea towel flat and use a lint roller to remove any loose fibres, dust or debris.

Next, place the towel in your heat press and give it a short pre-press to remove any moisture and wrinkles.

This helps create a more even surface for the sublimation transfer.

Allow the fabric to settle before positioning your printed design.

Step 3: Position Your Sublimation Transfer

Place your printed sublimation design face down onto the tea towel.

Carefully position the artwork where you'd like it to appear, ensuring it's straight and correctly aligned.

Secure the transfer with heat-resistant tape if needed to prevent movement during pressing.

Place protective paper beneath the towel and over the transfer to help protect your heat press from excess ink.

Top Tip: Because waffle tea towels have a textured surface, it's particularly important to ensure your transfer stays flat and doesn't move during pressing.

Step 4: Heat Press Your Tea Towel

Once everything is positioned correctly, you're ready to sublimate your tea towel.

Recommended Heat Press Settings

Setting Recommendation
Temperature 180°C
Time 60–100 seconds
Pressure Medium to firm
Equipment Flat heat press

These settings are a starting point based on our product guidance. Results can vary depending on your heat press, sublimation paper and ink, so we recommend testing before producing larger quantities.

Close your heat press carefully and apply even pressure across the design.

Avoid moving the towel or transfer during the pressing process, as this can cause ghosting or blurred images.

Step 5: Remove the Transfer and Allow to Cool

Once the pressing time is complete, carefully open your heat press.

Remove the transfer paper without dragging it across the fabric. Be careful, as the towel and paper will be hot.

Allow your freshly sublimated waffle tea towel to cool completely.

Your design should now be permanently transferred into the sublimation-compatible fibres, leaving a colourful, personalised finish.

Creative Ideas for Personalised Waffle Tea Towels

One of the best things about sublimation tea towels is their versatility. Here are a few ideas to inspire your next project.

Personalised Kitchen Gifts

Add family names, favourite recipes or thoughtful messages to create practical housewarming, birthday or wedding gifts.

Christmas Tea Towels

Create festive designs featuring Christmas illustrations, seasonal greetings or personalised family names. These are ideal for Christmas gift bundles and festive kitchen decorations.

Business Branding

Custom tea towels can make excellent promotional products for cafés, bakeries, restaurants and other businesses.

Wedding Favours

Create personalised tea towels featuring the happy couple's names, wedding date or a special illustration.

Products for Small Businesses

If you run a personalised gift business, sublimation waffle tea towels are a great addition to your product range. They're practical, easy to customise and suitable for a wide variety of occasions.

How to Care for Sublimated Waffle Tea Towels

To help keep your personalised tea towels looking their best, follow these care instructions:

  • Machine wash at 30°C.

  • Allow to air dry naturally.

  • Do not tumble dry.

  • If ironing is required, iron on the reverse, non-printed side only.

Following these instructions will help preserve the fabric and printed design.

Our Top Tips for Better Sublimation Results

Always pre-press your fabric. Removing excess moisture and wrinkles can help prevent uneven transfers.

Use high-quality artwork. Sharp, high-resolution designs will generally produce better results than low-resolution images.

Check your pressure. Waffle-weave fabric has a textured surface, so consistent pressure is important for an even transfer.

Prevent ghosting. Keep your sublimation paper securely positioned and avoid shifting it when opening the press.

Test your settings. Every heat press behaves slightly differently. A test print can help you find the best combination of time, temperature and pressure.
